Sunset Cliffs Natural Park

We are Friends of Sunset Cliffs

Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a public park in the City of San Diego. It stretches for more than a mile along the Sunset Cliffs above the Pacific Ocean, from Ocean Beach to Naval Base Point Loma.

The narrow, 8-acre, northern part - “the Linear” - 8 acres, adjoins Sunset Cliffs Boulevard.

The broad, 60-acre, southern part - “the Hillside” - slopes below Point Loma Nazarene University.

Pedestrian trails, with benches, run the length of the park and up and down the Hillside. Six off-street parking lots accommodate the vehicles of visitors.

Coastal resources at the Park feature dramatic cliff formations shaped by forces of erosion, terraces, promontories, rugged, vertical cliff faces and sea caves. The terrace and promontories offer informal pedestrian paths, native vegetation and expansive ocean views. Below the cliffs are pocket beaches, tide pools, reefs, surf and the Pacific Ocean.

After years of study by environmental and community leaders a Master Plan for the Park was established in 2005 and ratified by the San Diego City Council and the California Coastal Commission. It calls upon us to: “Create a Park where people can enjoy San Diego’s natural coastal environment as it once was, free from the effects of man and intended to inspire the user to reflect on the grandeur of the sea, and the beauty of the cliffs that are Point Loma.”

The entire Master Plan can be found at:

  • The Friends of Sunset Cliffs are stewards of the park and are thus chiefly concerned with the sustainability and long-term resilience of both the linear and hillside sections of the park.

  • We aim to foster a biodiverse ecosystem in the park. Native plants such as the California Box Thorn have root systems which help hold the cliff’s edge together and supports its resilience.

  • Send us an email! Let us know what your interests are and we will get back to you.
